Astro Pop Shot Variations and Substitutions
Consider a few of these ideas if you want a different flavor combination or to add a little more kick.
- Swap your grenadine for a cherry liqueur or mix in a half-ounce of vodka or rum with your grenadine before adding to a shot glass.
- Instead of banana liqueur, opt for pineapple rum, vodka, or even tequila. You can even make your own tropical pineapple-infused liquor at home.
- For a less boozy top layer, use passion fruit syrup or puree. Or, keep it boozy with a passion fruit-infused liqueur.
Garnishes
Just because the astro pop shot doesn't call for a garnish doesn't mean you have to accept that.
- Include a citrus garnish to offset the sweet flavors. Consider a lemon, lime, or orange wedge, wheel, or slice.
- Pierce a cherry with a cocktail skewer to rest atop the shot glass, removing it before taking the shot.
- Add a colorful sugar rim using green, red, and yellow sugars to mimic the layers of the shot. Mix the colors together in a saucer. After rubbing the rim of the glass with a lemon wedge, dip the rim in the sugars.
- Add a sprinkle of edible glitter.
Enjoying the Astro Pop Shot
Nothing beats the nostalgia of childhood candy, and the astro pop is no exception. Starting in the 1960s, the astro pops were an out-of-this-world popular treat with their signature layered cherry, passionfruit, and pineapple flavors. There's no mystery why this sugary treat was so popular. Helped along by the space race, these lollipops had no choice but to find their own moment of glory.
As for the astro pop shot origin, there's not as much of a clear answer. However, it's easy to draw the conclusion that the sweet and colorful taste of the sucker made for an alluring and fun cocktail or shot. And sometimes, that's the best start.
