  • Use freshly squeezed key lime juice in place of the lime juice.
  • Muddle a few slices of fresh jalapeño with the blue curaçao for a spicy margarita.
  • Add a few dashes of habanero bitters.
  • For a smokier flavor, replace the tequila with mezcal.

Garnishes

With its vivid blue coloring, this margarita is already a stunner. Still, you can make it even more eye popping with a pretty garnish:

  • Garnish with an orange peel, wheel, or wedge for a vivid color contrast.
  • Salt the rim like a traditional margarita.
  • Garnish with a pretty dried or fresh hibiscus bloom.
  • Sugar the rim with blue sugar spinkles (or the shade of your choice if you want a vivid color contrast).

About the Blue Margarita

If, as a kid, you delighted in the blue tongue that came when you ate blue ice pops, then you, friend, are the perfect candidate for a blue margarita. One of the main differences between the classic margarita and the blue margarita is that only one has the potential to turn your tongue blue.

While this drink definitely has a different color and appearance, once you take a sip of a blue margarita, you'll find it tastes almost exactly the same as the classic margarita. So what gives? The answer lies with the blue curaçao. While this liqueur has dye added to make your drinks a distinctly colorful, all curaçao is orange flavored and made from bitter curaçao oranges. So whether it's blue, green, red, or clear, curaçao pretty much tastes the same from color to color.
