Pick Me Up
Tiramisu is Italian for "pick me up" and this dessert filled with coffee, sugar, and coffee liquor will do just that. This Italian dessert is believed to have been invented in the early 1980s, either in the city of Treviso or the city of Siena. Regardless as to which city created tiramisu, once it was introduced to the public it's popularity quickly spread. Now, Tiramisu is found in just about every restaurant you go to.
Traditional Tiramisu Recipes
You don't have to go to a restaurant to enjoy traditional tiramisu recipes. All you need is some ingredients that can be easily found at your local supermarket and your favorite tiramisu recipe. This recipe calls for Kahlua, which you can leave out if you are serving your dessert to kids.
Ingredients
- 3 cups of strong black coffee, room temperature
- 3 tablespoons of Kahlua (optional)
- 2 eggs, separated
- 8 ounces of mascarpone cheese
- 1 cup of cream, whipped
- 16 ladyfingers (more may be needed depending on the size of the ladyfingers)
- 4 teaspoons of cocoa powder
Instructions
- You will need a 9x9 pan or dish for this recipe. A glass dish shows off your dessert well.
- Place the coffee and Kahlua (if using) in a bowl and mix well.
- Place the egg yolks and sugar into a small bowl and beat until thick and pale. You can use a hand-held electric mixer if you like.
- Add the mascarpone cheese and beat until just combined.
- Fold in the whipped cream.
- In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites until soft peaks form.
- Gently fold the egg whites into the mascarpone mixture.
- Dip the ladyfingers one at a time into the coffee mixture.
- Line the bottom of the dish with soaked ladyfingers.
- Spread half of the cream mixture evenly over the ladyfingers.
- Sprinkle half of the cocoa powder over the cream layer.
- Arrange another layer of soaked ladyfingers over the cream layer.
- Spread the remaining cream over the ladyfingers.
- Sprinkle with the remaining cocoa powder.
- Let your tiramisu chill in the refrigerator for at least two hours.
- A nice touch is to serve your tiramisu with a bit of crème Anglaise.
