Original Funeral Poems for Mothers

Poems sometimes feel more intimate than standard funeral readings. See if one of these original poems captures your feelings and is worth including in your mother's funeral service.

My Mother's Presence

By Kelly Roper

My mother's presence always warmed our home
With peace and security and love.
She was like a gentle breeze that wafted through
Setting things right, creating a haven for us all.
Whatever problems we had, Mom solved them.
Whatever triumphs we had, Mom celebrated them.
Whatever needs we had, Mom fulfilled them.
Surely such a mother could never drift far
From those she loved with all her heart.
Though she has left her earthly body behind,
I feel her presence still.
Mom remains close to me, she knows my sorrow,
And she enfolds me in invisible arms I can still feel,
And she comforts me.

Your Hug Meant the World

By Tamsen Butler

Nobody else held me so tight
Or made me feel so right
No one's eyes shined so bright with love
As my mom, who is now high above.

Your Hug Meant the World

Our Connection Remains

By Tamsen Butler

I'll always be a part of you,
You'll always be a part of me.
Genetic similarities? We had more than a few.
I'll hold you in my heart as you fly free.

Remembering Mom

By Kelly Roper

There are many things I'll remember
About my mom.
How soft her hands were,
How her eyes sparkled,
How her smile lit up her entire face.
I'll remember the hearty sound of her laugh,
And the tone of her voice when
Someone disappointed her.
But most of all, I'll remember how I felt
When she said to me, "I love you."
That was the best feeling in the world,
To know this very special woman
Loved me with all her heart.
Of all the memories that may dim
In the coming years,
That feeling is something I know
I'll never forget. And I just want to say,
I love you too, Mom.

A Gift From God

By Tamsen Butler

Mothers are a gift from heaven God uses to demonstrate his love for all children.
No one will ever love you like God or a mother does,
But take solace in the fact that you'll meet again someday.

A Gift From God

MOTHER

By Tamsen Butler

More loving than most
Often right, even when I thought she was wrong
Truly my biggest cheerleader
Heaven welcomed her with open arms
Every day without her will be empty
Radiance has now moved on.

I Dreamed Last Night

By Kelly Roper

I dreamed last night
That I was small.
My room was dark,
And I heard a strange call.

Scared and alone
I lept from my bed,
And in a great hurry,
From my room I fled.

I ran to my mother
And crawled into her bed.
She wrapped her arms around me,
And soothed my feelings of dread.

I wish I could wake up again
Right here in this room,
And find mother alive and well,
Not draped in death and gloom.

But this is no child's dream,
No nightmare I can escape.
My mother has gone, and I am left
To pass the years and wait.

To wait until the time God calls
And Mom and I are reunited.
She'll welcome me, and we'll embrace,
Never again to be divided.

Bible Readings for Funerals for Mothers

Bible readings often have a poetic quality to them. If religion had a special place in your mother's heart, one of these passages would be quite suitable for including at her funeral.

Psalm 91

Psalm 91 stresses the refuge offered by God. "... For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands..."

Psalm 23

Psalm 23 reminds readers to fear no evil, though they walk through the valley of the shadow of death. It's a reminder that those in Heaven have eternal life, which should be a comfort to family left behind.

Proverbs 31

Proverbs 31 contains King Lemuel's mother's teachings, which include descriptions and praise for a good wife and mother. There are several verses in particular which could be pulled from it and used as tributes in a mother's funeral reading or program.

  • Proverbs 31:25: "She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come."
  • Proverbs 31:26: "She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue."
  • Proverbs 31:31: "Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate."

Psalm 19

The glory of God is the main theme of Psalm 19. The decrees of the Lord are "... more precious than gold..." and "... sweeter than honey..."

Philippians 1:3

Philippians 1 is essentially a letter from Paul to the Philippians thanking them, but there's a verse from it that is perfect to quote for a mom who has passed. "I give thanks to my God at every remembrance of you..."

Psalm 27

Psalm 27 is a reminder that dwelling in the house of the Lord is the ultimate reward for living a Godly life. "... be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord."

Isaiah 66:13

While Isaiah Chapter 66 is primarily about God's judgement and the hope of salvation, verse 13 is a promise that He will comfort as tenderly as a mother. This is a great message to share with those who are in mourning. "As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you...."
